Light on a Hill (LOAH) is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards, empowering children aged 5-12 to care for the world around them.
Kandi Makandi founded LOAH in 2020 to encourage hands-on, joy-filled environmental education designed to be engaging, accessible, and rooted in sparking a fire within children who participate in their programs.
By reaching children at an early age—in the more remote area of Meru where other kids’ programs don’t exist—LOAH singularly provides a creative, critically-needed outlet and sanctuary for youth.
LOAH’s devotion to shaping confident, informed eco-champions is clear, and they’re empowering new generations to care for the world around them, today and into the future.

Kandi is one of those incredibly rare, once-in-a-lifetime community leaders that we are so lucky to partner up with.
She has a seemingly endless well of positive exuberance and patience for the kids in her program—almost all of whom rely on LOAH’s amazing programs as the sole escape and sanctuary in this remote, rural region, where kids can dance, paint, and garden—and just be kids.

LOAH was founded to give children a chance to appreciate the greatest resource they have as a community by enjoying it and also by expressing how beautiful it is through art.
You can be an engineer. You can be a pilot. I mean, all these are beautiful careers, but you can be an artist and a poet. And that is actually a dignified career. And the world is a big spectrum, with so much opportunity.
They are beautiful African kids, and they have so much to offer.
