Mo Dewji Foundation

Losing vision can mean losing independence, dignity, and the ability to earn a living—deeply affecting individuals, families, and entire communities. Treatable eye conditions like cataracts are far too common, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without sight.
The Mo Dewji Foundation is working to change this reality by bringing essential eye care directly to underserved regions. Through one of Tanzania’s most impactful eye care programs, the foundation delivers screenings, surgeries, medication, and holistic health services—helping thousands of people regain their sight and reclaim their lives.

This work comes to life through community outreach camps that welcome patients from across the region. Free eye exams, reading glasses, and life-changing cataract surgeries restore not only vision, but also confidence, independence, and hope.

Singida Eye Camp

The Film

Our camera team arrived a few days before the eye camp in Singida (a small city in central Tanzania) was to begin, and had the privilege of meeting Balbina, an older farmer struggling with blindness in one eye. Unable to afford medical care, Balbina was already set on getting treatment at the eye camp and allowed our cameras to follow her through her surgery.

While it was incredible to see the thousands of people from the community lining up each day to receive free eye care, it was even more profoundly moving to become friends with Balbina and capture her single, transformative journey. We are very happy to report that Balbina can now see equally well in both eyes.

Because of my eyes, I won’t even see properly when I’m cooking. One eye is completely blind. I tried to do some exercises so I could see, but nothing. Before the eye problems, I used to cook at a school and earn a little income, so when my eyes started causing trouble, how can you cook for people?

We are low on money and cannot afford things, so I am suffering like that here.
