Art of a Child

Art of a Child is a community-based organization in Kampala, Uganda using expressive art as a gateway to inclusive, equitable education for children from underserved backgrounds.
Their programs are designed with care and intention, ensuring that no child is left behind—regardless of circumstance, ability, or access to traditional learning environments.

By combining education with emotional expression and community engagement, they help break cycles of deprivation and empower young people to grow into confident, active contributors within their communities. Beyond education, Art of a Child emphasizes supporting women and girls through sustainable, community-driven initiatives.

Inspired by Art of a Child leader Susan Tusabe, once a student, now-leader Kashish Khan has created the organization’s first reusable menstrual pad product—now being produced at scale in a local factory. This facility provides local employment for women and supplies reusable pads at an affordable cost—advancing dignity, health, and opportunity alongside education.

The Film

“
Kashish is one of those young, natural-born leaders you often hear about but so rarely encounter in life. Innovative, charismatic, slyly funny, and endlessly curious—we knew she would be an ideal central subject to best amplify the amazing work being done by Art of a Child. Kashish was first introduced to their programs when she was just 13.

Now, 7 years later—a budding, ambitious entrepreneur working tirelessly to improve her small corner of Kampala—Kashish is living proof of just what an impact an organization like Art of a Child can have on the trajectory of not just a single young woman, but for the entire community that surrounds her.

We have sessions where we teach girls how to make the pads and all about menstruation. We teach boys the same thing because they also have mothers and sisters.

I hope this is the last generation of men that stigmatizes menstruation, and I know they will do way better because now they will grow up with the knowledge, and they are just lovely.
